R&R in LaJolla

Thursday, May 22nd, 2003

The long week was capped off with some quality relaxation in La Jolla (pronounced La Jolla) with my buddy Matty D. It’s great to have a friend since high school who you can just pick up with no matter how long it’s been. Little golf, little beach, little surf (very little :).

// 89 @ the Vineyard (Matty with a 138 his first time out – not bad!)

// The Surf

// The Beach

// Matt – post surf lesson

Urban Assault

Thursday, May 22nd, 2003

A couple Days in LA. I’m not a big fan of LA – it’s a borderline hate. I honestly can’t explain why – I must just be an east coaster at heart :) Either way, it’s always good for a good urban assualt exercise by our beloved armed forces. Sitting on a bench on the phone one minute and the next a chopper zooming overhead. A quick stop, 4 troopers down the line and safely on the ground and then they’re otta there! What a sight!

An afternoon in Venice at Nike’s Blue House – the creative center that drives energy into our brand (plus not a bad view).

the Big 3-0

Thursday, May 22nd, 2003

aahhh… it’s past. The big 3-0. I don’t feel much better or worse, but it’s merely just a fact. It reminds me of the anonymous quote: “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?” 22 is my answer today :) – the birthday was good, filled with friends, meetings, gnt’s, missed flights, bi-coastal travel and the like. Here are a couple picks for your enjoyment of the long day into the 3rd decade…

// 12:47am in Union Square, NYC

// W.30th Street at 30

// 11:24pm (Tokyo Time) in Times Square, NYC

// Cover of the NY Post

// How the Market Faired on 5/13

// Missed Flight at JFK

// PS2 Party in LA

so that’s the day in the quick look :)

Have we given up on being inspired?

Most people know that i’m a psuedo/wannabe political junky. With that, I love the show the West Wing and have converted many a followers. It’s a quality show. Produced and written extremely well covering a topic that is looked upon with disgust many times – but doing it in an interesting and compelling way. With that – this is a trend that has been disturbing me for a long time…

“Fox again took Wednesday night with a salute to the Marine and winning the A18-49 category according to Nielsen Media Research, pulling an overall 7.1/19 for the night. The other networks followed, not too far behind with ABC earning a 5.0/13, NBC 4.2/11 and CBS 2.4/6. The first hour of prime was all about Fox: That 70′s Show 5.8/18 and American Idol 10.1/27. For the hour Fox avg’d an 8.0/23, ahead of the #2 net for the hour, ABC, with a 3.5/10 for its sitcoms. The WB with Dawson’s Creek delivered a 2.7/8 at 8p, while Star Search on CBS managed a 2.3/7, tied in share with NBC. At 9p ABC pulled ahead with The Bachelor scoring a 6.4/16 over Fox’s 6.2/15 for double run Bernie Macs. An original episode of West Wing barely disturbed the radar with a 4.3/11. At 10p, an original L&O put NBC on top with a 5.8/16, over ABC’s final moments of The Bachelor and Extreme Makeover (5.1/14).”

Basically a slew of reality/pop shows have been overruning the networks and have sucked up rating points from quality shows on a daily basis. I seldom watch this crab and aside from morning water cooler chatter, barely understand the appeal. Have we given up on being inspired? Have we lost the desire to be led down a path of what’s possible and have settled for a simple, “at least we’re not a disfunctional as them” observation? The amusing and contrary point to this trend is the box office. Movies like Harry Potter, Spider Man, X-Men and The Matrix have led the way at the box office and taken millions of viewers on a journey that Simon could never come close to. Is it simply we like at fantasy when we go out and our reality when we’re at home? I just don’t know.

Bits and Bobs

Ugh. It’s been a wicked long week. Work is really starting to kick into gear in mostly good ways. I’ve off to NYC/LA tomorrow for some work and play. Caught the Cinco de Maya festival on the portland water front – in the rain of course. Much fun with amazing dancers and musicians from Guadalahararaa. Did a little farming no sunday – we’re talking snakes, worms, dirts and lots of weeds. They even let me dig up shit with a shovel! Learned a lot of urban farming at Zenger Farms. Could a balanced mid-sized city community support a farming community providing fresh veggies to citizens out of tax dollars? OK, that may be a little too liberal for even me :). Other than that, early mornings and late nights are starting to wear on me. Trying to keep it all together and in perspective. 5 days till the big 3-0.
