Most people know that i’m a psuedo/wannabe political junky. With that, I love the show the West Wing and have converted many a followers. It’s a quality show. Produced and written extremely well covering a topic that is looked upon with disgust many times – but doing it in an interesting and compelling way. With that – this is a trend that has been disturbing me for a long time…
“Fox again took Wednesday night with a salute to the Marine and winning the A18-49 category according to Nielsen Media Research, pulling an overall 7.1/19 for the night. The other networks followed, not too far behind with ABC earning a 5.0/13, NBC 4.2/11 and CBS 2.4/6. The first hour of prime was all about Fox: That 70′s Show 5.8/18 and American Idol 10.1/27. For the hour Fox avg’d an 8.0/23, ahead of the #2 net for the hour, ABC, with a 3.5/10 for its sitcoms. The WB with Dawson’s Creek delivered a 2.7/8 at 8p, while Star Search on CBS managed a 2.3/7, tied in share with NBC. At 9p ABC pulled ahead with The Bachelor scoring a 6.4/16 over Fox’s 6.2/15 for double run Bernie Macs. An original episode of West Wing barely disturbed the radar with a 4.3/11. At 10p, an original L&O put NBC on top with a 5.8/16, over ABC’s final moments of The Bachelor and Extreme Makeover (5.1/14).”
Basically a slew of reality/pop shows have been overruning the networks and have sucked up rating points from quality shows on a daily basis. I seldom watch this crab and aside from morning water cooler chatter, barely understand the appeal. Have we given up on being inspired? Have we lost the desire to be led down a path of what’s possible and have settled for a simple, “at least we’re not a disfunctional as them” observation? The amusing and contrary point to this trend is the box office. Movies like Harry Potter, Spider Man, X-Men and The Matrix have led the way at the box office and taken millions of viewers on a journey that Simon could never come close to. Is it simply we like at fantasy when we go out and our reality when we’re at home? I just don’t know.
